What is engineered wood flooring?
Engineered wood flooring is a high-quality, durable alternative to solid wood, designed to offer the same natural beauty with greater stability. Each plank is made up of a real hardwood top layer, known as the wear layer or veneer, bonded to multiple layers of high-density fibreboard (HDF) or plywood beneath.
This layered construction makes engineered wood more resistant to moisture and temperature changes than solid wood, meaning it is less likely to warp, expand, or contract over time.
Engineered wood is available in a wide range of species, finishes, and thicknesses, and can be installed using floating, glue-down, or nail-down methods. It is particularly well suited to homes with underfloor heating and rooms where humidity levels fluctuate.
Can engineered wood flooring be sanded?
Yes, although how many times depends on the thickness of the hardwood wear layer.
Thick wear layer (4–6mm)
Can typically be sanded 2–3 times, similar to solid wood.
Standard wear layer (2–3mm)
Can usually be sanded usually once or twice, lightly only.
Light damage?
Buffing and refinishing with a protective coat may be enough.
Can engineered flooring be used with underfloor heating?
Yes, and it is one of the best flooring options for use with underfloor heating. The multi-layered core gives engineered wood greater stability than solid wood when exposed to heat, making it far less likely to expand, contract, or warp.
- Surface temperature must not exceed 27°C.
- Check that the specific product is approved for underfloor heating - not all are.
- Some floors can be floated over underlay; others need a full glue-down for better heat transfer.
- The flooring must be fully acclimatised to the room before installation.
How is engineered wood flooring laid?
There are three main installation methods. The right one depends on your subfloor type and whether you are working with underfloor heating.
Floating (tongue & groove/click)
Planks lock together over underlay. Quickest method, suitable for most domestic installations.
Glue-down
Bonded directly to the subfloor. More permanent; recommended for underfloor heating.
Nail/staple down
Best for timber subfloors, secured with a flooring nailer or stapler.
Prepare the subfloor
It must be clean, dry, and level. Use a self-levelling compound if needed. Lay underlay if using the floating method.
Acclimatise the planks
Leave the flooring in the room for at least 48 hours before laying to adjust to temperature and humidity.
Plan your layout
Start from the longest straight wall. Leave a 10–15mm expansion gap around the perimeter and stagger joints for a natural look.
Lay the floor
Click, glue, or nail according to your chosen method. Ensure tight joints throughout.
Finish
Remove spacers and fit skirting or beading to cover the expansion gap. Allow adhesive to cure fully before use if glued.
How do you clean engineered wood flooring?
A consistent routine is all it takes to keep engineered wood looking its best.
- Day to day: Sweep or vacuum regularly with a soft-bristle broom or hard floor attachment. A dry or lightly damp microfibre mop picks up fine dust without risk to the finish.
- Mopping: Always use a damp mop, not a wet one. Use a pH-neutral wood floor cleaner and avoid bleach or ammonia-based products. A light spray-and-wipe method works well.
- Spills: Blot promptly with a dry or slightly damp cloth. For tougher marks, a diluted wood floor cleaner on a soft sponge will usually do the job.
- Preventing damage: Fit felt pads to furniture legs. Use mats in high-traffic areas. Keep pet nails trimmed. Never use a steam cleaner.
- Long-term: Reapply a protective oil or lacquer coat every few years. If your floor has a thicker wear layer, light sanding and refinishing is an option when needed.
