You've just had your new wood floors fitted and they look absolutely stunning. The last thing you want to do is ruin them by jumping back in too soon. But how long do you actually need to wait, and does it vary depending on the type of floor you've had installed?

It Depends on the Type of Floor and Finish

There's no single answer that covers every situation, because the waiting time depends on a couple of key factors: the type of wood flooring you have and the finish that's been applied.

Glued Down Floors

If your floor has been glued directly to the subfloor, you'll typically need to wait at least 24 hours before walking on it. This gives the adhesive time to fully cure and bond properly. Walking on it too soon can cause boards to shift or lift before the glue has set.

For heavier furniture, it's worth waiting a full 48 hours to be on the safe side.

Floating Floors

Floating floors, where the boards click together and aren't fixed to the subfloor, can usually be walked on almost immediately after fitting. There's no adhesive curing time to worry about. Lacquered Finishes

Full hardness is usually reached after around 7 days, so take it easy in that first week.

Oiled Finishes

Site-applied oiled floors need a little more patience. Most oils need at least 24 to 48 hours before any foot traffic, and the floor should be kept clear of furniture and heavy use for up to 5 to 7 days while the oil fully cures. Some oils require a second coat too, so factor that into your timeline when planning the work.

  • Keep pets off a newly finished floor for at least 48 hours. Claws and uncured finishes are not a good combination.
  • Avoid dragging anything across the floor until it has fully hardened.
  • If you have underfloor heating, keep it at a low, stable temperature for the first week rather than cranking it up straight away.
