Why Veneer Thickness Matters When Choosing Engineered Wood Flooring

If you've been browsing engineered wood flooring, you've probably noticed a number like 14/3mm or 20/6mm in the product specs. Most people glance past it. But that second number - the veneer thickness - could be one of the most important decisions you make when choosing your floor at the wooden floor store.

Here's everything you need to know.
What Is Veneer Thickness?
Engineered wood flooring is made up of two main parts: a stable core (usually plywood) and a top layer of real hardwood - the veneer, also called the wear layer.
The wear layer is the topmost layer of authentic wood on the board's surface. It's the visible layer once the floor is installed, and it bears the brunt of foot traffic and general wear over time.
When you see a spec like 15/4mm, it breaks down simply:
- 15mm = the total thickness of the board
- 4mm = the thickness of the real wood veneer on top
The remaining difference - 11mm in this case - is made up of the synthetic core materials beneath.
So while both numbers matter, it's the second one that tells you the most about quality and longevity.
Why Does It Matter?
1. It Determines How Long Your Floor Will Last

The veneer is essentially the wear layer of engineered hardwood. Thin veneers are often found on entry-level products, while premium engineered floors feature a thicker hardwood layer. The difference may not be noticeable at installation, but it determines how well the floor performs after years of use.
A thin veneer floor may need replacement after 10–15 years, while a thick veneer floor can last several decades with occasional refinishing.
2. It Decides Whether You Can Refinish
This is the big one. Refinishing means sanding back the surface to remove scratches and worn finish, then re-sealing it - essentially giving your floor a brand new life.
Each sanding removes roughly 1mm of the floor's surface. So a 1mm thick veneer means you can't refinish the floor at all. With a 3mm wear layer, however, you can sand and refinish up to three times - potentially adding another 50 years to the floor's life.

To allow for sanding and refinishing comparable to traditional hardwood flooring, the wear layer should be a minimum of 4mm.
3. It Affects How the Floor Looks

There are two ways to create the veneer layer - dry sawn, which is cut with a saw blade like slicing bread, or rotary peeled, which is cut with a knife like peeling a potato. These methods produce very different results in terms of aesthetics and quality.
The dry sawn method gives you the same beautiful heartwood, grain, and character as solid wood, and allows for a thicker veneer. Rotary peeled material produces thinner layers of around 2mm, and the boards can end up resembling plywood rather than real hardwood.
A thicker veneer simply has more wood to show off - richer grain, more natural character, and a more authentic hardwood feel underfoot.
What About Underfloor Heating?
Good news - engineered wood is far better suited to underfloor heating than solid wood. But veneer thickness still plays a role here.
So if you're installing over underfloor heating, you don't necessarily need to go for the thickest veneer available - a 3-4mm wear layer on a 14-15mm board is usually the sweet spot.
Which Veneer Thickness Is Right for You?
Not every household requires the thickest veneer possible. Families with pets, children, or high-traffic areas benefit from a thicker veneer since it provides greater resilience and refinishing flexibility. In a guest room or low-use space, a thinner veneer might be more practical and budget-friendly.
Use this as a starting point:
Choose 2-3mm if:
- It's a low-traffic room (spare bedroom, home office)
- You're on a tighter budget
- You're unlikely to refinish in the future
Choose 4mm+ if:
- It's a busy family home with kids and pets
- You want the option to refresh the floor in 10–15 years
- You want the richest, most authentic hardwood look
- You're making a long-term investment in the property
